The 3-2-1 backup rule – and why ransomware made it 3-2-1-1-0

The 3-2-1 rule has been the backbone of backup strategy for years. It’s simple to remember and, followed properly, means no single failure can wipe out your data.

The 3-2-1 rule

  • 3 copies of your data – the live copy plus at least two backups.
  • 2 different types of storage – for example, disk and cloud, or disk and tape.
  • 1 copy off-site – away from the building where your systems live.

Why ransomware added “1-0”

Modern attackers specifically hunt for backups. If every copy is reachable from the network with the same credentials, they can all be encrypted or deleted. That’s why many organisations now follow 3-2-1-1-0:

  • 1 copy immutable or offline – locked against changes, or air-gapped on tape.
  • 0 errors – backups are automatically verified so you know they’ll restore.

Putting it into practice with Acronis

Acronis Cyber Protect can send each backup to multiple destinations, so a typical setup looks like this:

  1. A fast local backup to a NAS for quick everyday restores.
  2. An off-site, immutable copy in the cloud – Acronis Cloud or S3-compatible storage such as Saved to Cloud.
  3. Optionally, a periodic offline copy on LTO tape for long-term retention.

Add Acronis backup validation to cover the “0 errors” part, and you have a strategy that stands up to hardware failure, disasters and ransomware.
